The Isha Upanishad’s first two verses
Read the Isha Upanishad’s opening verses as an invitation to see the divine in daily life, loosen envy, and keep acting with care.
STEP 1
Read the opening pair
The first verse places the world in the presence of the divine and asks us not to covet another person’s wealth. The second turns to a life of righteous action.
STEP 2
Pause over the divine presence
Paramananda explains “covered by the Lord” as perceiving the divine presence everywhere. This is his commentary on the opening verse, helping the reader consider its meaning.
STEP 3
Think about a whole life
The second verse speaks of someone wishing to live a hundred years. Its focus is how that life is lived: through right action. Read the long life as the setting for that question.
STEP 4
Bring it closer to home
If someone’s new purchase leaves you comparing your life with theirs, you might ask: which relationship or responsibility would I like to give my care to today? This is one way to reflect on the opening pair.
Read the two verses together, allowing space for both inward understanding and daily responsibilities.
